Journalists nabbed in NYC police sweep

Police kept journalists at a distance from covering the raid on Tuesday, and several of them were arrested according to the demonstrators and other journalists photographing and filming their peers being taken into custody, the Associated Press reported.

According to witnesses, reporter Karen Matthews and photographer Seth Wenig of the Associated Press in New York as well as Matthew Lysiak of the Daily News of New York were among the detainees.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg defended the New York Police Department (NYPD)s behavior towards the media, saying it was intended to keep them out of harms way.

"The police department routinely keeps members of the press off to the side when theyre in the middle of a police action. Its to prevent the situation from getting worse and its to protect the members of the press," Bloomberg said.

However, journalists denounced the widespread arrests as unusual even for the most chaotic press events, and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said the council would look into "reports of excessive force by the NYPD and reports of infringement of the rights of the press."

The Occupy movement emerged after a group of demonstrators gathered in New Yorks financial district on September 17 to protest against the unjust distribution of wealth in the country and the excessive influence of major corporations on US policies.

Despite the police crackdown and mass arrests, the Occupy movement, which grew out of the Occupy Wall Street movement, has now spread to major US cities as well as to Australia, Britain, Germany, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Portugal, and other countries.
