IED kills British soldier in Afghanistan

The soldier, from the 1st Queens Dragoons Guards, was on a joint foot patrol with the Afghan National Security Forces in the Nahr-e Saraj district on Sunday when the IED detonated, AFP reported.

Roadside bombs and improvised explosive devices are by far the most lethal weapon Taliban militants use against foreign troops, Afghan forces, and civilians.

The latest incident brings the death toll for British soldiers serving in Afghanistan since October 2001 to 389, according to a tally by Agence France-Presse.

Britain has around 9,500 military servicemen in Afghanistan, making it the second largest force in the country after the contingent of the United States.

According to official figures released by the website icasualties.org, a total of 525 foreign troops have lost their lives in Afghanistan so far this year.

However, 2010 remains the deadliest year for foreign military forces with a total death toll of 711. The figure eclipsed the previous record of 521, set in 2009.
