Iran not taking part in IAEA ME confab

“As long as the director general of IAEA [Yukiya Amano] applies double standards to certain issues, including [the cases of] Syria and the Zionist regime [of Israel], such conferences will achieve nothing,” Ali Asghar Soltanieh said on Sunday.

The IAEA is holding a two-day conference on a Middle East free of nuclear weapons in the Austrian capital city of Vienna from November 21-22.

Soltanieh said Iran believes that as long as Israel has not joined the Non-Proliferation Treaty and its nuclear activities have not come under the supervision of the agency, there will be no hope in the establishment of a nuclear weapons-free zone in the Middle East, ISNA reported.

He said Iran has been a pioneer of nuclear disarmament in the Middle East and this issue has been confirmed in various agency resolutions.

Referring to Syrias case in the agencys Board of Governors, Soltanieh said the reason this case has been referred to the UN Security Council is because of pressure from Israel and the US, as well as director generals biased approach to the case.

"Given that the director general of the agency does not fulfill his responsibilities towards Syria and the Zionist regime with impartiality and particularly his silence on the behavior of the Zionist regime in attacking some centers in Syria, we think this conference...will not be useful," he added.

"Because international law and regulations have been repeatedly breached by IAEA and its director general, Iran will not take part in the conference," he emphasized.

In his latest report on Irans nuclear program, which was released on November 8, Amano claimed that Iran had engaged in activities related to developing nuclear weapons before 2003, adding that these activities “may still be ongoing.”

Iran has dismissed the report as "unbalanced, unprofessional and prepared with political motivation and under political pressure by mostly the United States."
